Property:
Colorless clear oil liquid, with unpleasant rancidity pungent smell. The melting point is -20.8℃, the boiling point is 140.99, 41.65(1330Pa), the relative density is 0.9930, and the refractive index is 1.3869. Ka = 1.34 x 10-5. It is miscible with water. Soluble in alcohol, chloroform and ether. Chemical properties are active, acidic, can occur salt, esterification, reduction and other reactions.
Usage:
1. Propionic acid is widely used in the food industry to produce preservatives such as calcium propionate and sodium propionate.
2. Used as organic reagent, esterifying agent and plasticizer. Because propionic acid can dissolve most organic matter, propionic acid is also a common organic solvent. Propionic acid can be used in some pickling and polishing solutions, as a buffer in weakly acidic solutions (e.g., galvanizing, electroless nickel plating).
3. It can also be used to produce propionate flavors and fragrances.
1. Used as pharmaceutical intermediates, such as propionic anhydride as propionylation agent for medicine, antibiotic drugs such as keramycin propionate.
